Membrance Jordan in 1850
Re: Membrance Jordan Siblings
In Russell we are talking about possible 3 men with the Jordan name to consider.
1, Membrance Jordan b Greenville SC.
2. Absolem Walter Jordan b ca 1801 Edgefield SC married 13 Feb 1822 Lydia Davidson. I think Absolem was brothers with Garrett Gannet JORDAN Jr. from Edgefield who married a Lucy.
3. Benjamin Jordans b GA offspring who came from GA to ALWhen was this family in the 1870 census? They should have been in Butler Co. or perhaps still in Pike Co. I haven't found them.
Hmm... The originated in Russell in 1850 and Joseph is still in Russell in 1880 so he may have been in 1870- I have no access.
Residence: 1850 Census, Barbour County, AL
1860 census PIKE CO. AL
Note: THE INFORMATION LISTED WAS FOUND IN THE 1860 ALABAMA CENSUS AND RURAL LANDOWNERS OF BARBOUR COUNTY, ALABAMA IN 1851. HE WAS IN ALABAMA BY 1848 ACCORDING TO THE ABOVE BOOK. HIS PROPERTY IN BARBOUR COUNTY WAS LISTED AS 8-9-28. THIS IS THE SECTION, RANGE AND TOWNSHIP NUMBERS. HE IS LISTED IN THE FULL NAME INDEX OF THE EASTERN CREEK INDIANS. HIS WIFE MALINDA LAWHORN IS ALSO LISTED AS A CREEK INDIAN.

I do not know if my Jordans are related to Membrance. My Warren Jordan could just as likely be the son of Benjamin Jordan of Washington Co GA or of Solomen Jordan. Warrens only connection to Membrance is that Membrance was in Russell-Butler counties. Benjamins father was from Edgefield SC, but Membrance seems to be from Greenville SC. My family seems to think his daughter was half Indian-Sarah Mae Jordan who married Thomas D. Aldridge about 1875 in Goodwater, Coosa.
I have not tried to trace Membrance` census .I am really not sure he was an Indian either, even though he is listed as such in 1851 in a list of farmers- maybe he just claimed it because of his wife(for some reason we are unaware of). The fact that his descendant-a male Jordan- did not turn up with Indian DNA however does not mean much because many times the children listed are not really the children of the man of the house because they may be relatives of the wife or she may have been married before, raped or had an affair- I saw a program on TV which claimed that a very large percentage (26%)of children even today are not the children of the father.

Thomas S. Jordan was born on 3 January, 1832 in Macon, Bibb county, GA (according to his obit). Both of his parents were born in GA (according to his census info).
In 1847, he began apprenticeship as a printer in "the Advertiser" office (this is from his newspaper obit in Ashland, AL - I am assuming that this means the "Advertiser" newspaper in Montgomery, AL, given that, according to that same obit, in 1852 he was foreman of the job office that printed the Code of Alabama - Brittan and DeWolf, State Printers, Montgomery, AL). On July 21, 1860, Thomas and Mary's first son, Joseph Wiley Jordan, was born. This son later practiced medicine in Ashland, Clay county, Alabama until his death in 1951. He also was elected to serve in the state legislature in 1930s. In 1862, a second son, William Dotson Jordan, was born to Thomas and Mary. As an adult, he owned a drug store in Ashland, Alabama. In 1864, a daughter, Mary, was born.
After the war, Thomas farmed for a while near Opelika, AL, then worked as a printer until starting his own newspaper, The Opelika Reformer.
